Welcome to Foodie Fridays! A series that will be dedicated to everything food related. From new restaurants, and old favorites, to the ultimate brunch spots as well as tried and true recipes. I can’t wait to share all my favorites with you every Friday!

This week is all about this local gem – Dove’s Luncheonette. Located right under the Damen train stop. It’s counter style eating features a 41 still Luncheonette that plays amazing soul and blues (on vinyl!). Dennis Bernard’s kitchen cooks up some amazing Mexican cuisine that is good for brunch, lunch, or dinner (See Dove’s website). Every dish is well thought and the execution is to die for. The drinks also compete with some of the best. Do not underestimate their Bloody Mary’s with Mezcal. And their mimosas, may look small but they are strong and delicious! And now for some of my favorite dishes from Dove’s:

Chicken Fried Chicken is probably their most popular dish and definitely a soul-food-favorite. Buttermilk fried chicken is smothered in a chorizo verde gravy, with peas and sautéed pearl onions on top. Need I say more? You can add a fried egg on top…this dish does not disappoint.

This Beef Bowl is a seasonal item, but I am going to guess that they will bring it back for Spring. I saw the hostess taking pictures of this beef bowl. I took one look at it and had to order it. First, its gorgeous and that is the first thing I noticed (I mean look at it! We do eat with our eyes). Then you smell that incredible, super fragrant rice bowl with beans, avocado, cilantro, braised beef, that just falls apart, and a halved-grilled lime. I couldn’t resist and I added a fried egg to it also. Sue me. Lime squeezing is optional, but mixing that egg yolk into everything is a definite must. Everything together is balanced by the rich yolk, the beef ads texture and the cilantro and lime cool everything off. I can’t wait to have this again.

Avocado Toast is a must here. If you see this on their menu you have to try it. The bread is delicious the avocado is just right. Made with fresh seasonal greens, some sliced tangerines and a sprinkle of creamy cheese on top. This looks like a fancy Crudo and tastes like an upgraded avo-toast. A must try when this gets added back to the menu.

Come back next week for my favorite breakfast sandwich probably ever.

What are some of your favorite local brunch/ dinner spots?
